Pretty soon there are two dancing in the aisle, two playing drums, and of course singing and a keyboard. The diversity among the people is great. There are a variety of colors, a variety of mental, emotional and physical difficulties, a variety of socio-economic status represented in this moment. We are in it together. Authentic community. Does this scene make anyone uncomfortable? I have been surveying people since Tuesday, when this occurred, to hear feedback on how different people experienced that moment. Some were profoundly impacted by the experience.
The moment following the scene above was the moment we stopped and gave silence in remembrance of dear Robin Williams. And we reflected on the reality that in the room many suffer from similar demons and have faced their own moment of decision to stay or to go from this life. Table Grace is a place full of Spirit and pain, offering food for the body and food for the soul, doing our best to stay connected to the Source, which is God, who can do the only true nourishing that is everlasting. It is our job to walk together through the difficulties of life instead of burying our heads in the sand and pretending reality doesn’t exist, or that suffering doesn’t exist.
Is this shocking to the people walking by who choose not to enter because of fear or discomfort? Of course it’s shocking! If we were going for comfort we would’ve opened a nice cozy restaurant with fixed prices on the menu and created a nice little business for ourselves. That was not the vision or the call. Shocking grace is the only way to growing toward the Kingdom of Heaven here and now. Join us!
