As I pondered the “Called to serve” theme to compose our theme song for the year I found myself hung up on a few concepts. Serving one another in love takes a daily death to self. So often times in our human condition we are caught in a perpetual cycle of ego. It’s almost as if many who roam this earth were emotionally crippled around the age of 5 and didn’t learn the concepts taught in the kindergarten classroom. Sometimes because their hearts were too heavy with burdens they were carrying, or their tummies too empty.
Whatever the case may be, I feel blessed to be walking side by side with so many who inspire me. Even in their brokenness and pain. It is in those places of weakness, pain and suffering that the essence of Christ’s love is felt the deepest. And if we can all let the light of God’s love shine in those places of pain, emptiness, shame, instead of hiding, I believe that little by little, over time, it won’t hurt so bad. Or at least we will know that we don’t have to walk it alone.
That is what serving is. Being with another in the depth of the challenges of life. Saying I am sorry that you are suffering, let me be with you in that, perhaps then it won’t be so heavy. Whether it is in the mind, body or soul. Whether it is a glass of water, a meal, a house, or a shoulder and a listening ear.
I will close today with verses from the theme song “Called to Serve”.
The Holy Spirit moves through us
Calling each to deeper trust.
To be authentic community
Where He can love you through me.
Let me be your servant true,
You can be my servant too.
Learning together how to be
A humbly connected community.
Let it be so! Amen!
