The thing about listening is that it takes more effort and intention than most of us really naturally give to each moment of our day. It takes discipline and repetition. It takes practice, practice and more practice. At first it is simply awareness of the mind. The mind might be thinking what it has thought minute by minute, day by day for the last several years, and you, the observer have allowed that mind to be you. In reality you are the observer. And once you put your awareness on that, the mind is simply something to be observed, it is no longer you. So the thoughts, repetitive as they are float by like clouds, you watch them and think, oh that again, and then let them go, over and over and over again. While simultaneously focusing your awareness on your very steady breathing.
